Meet the Team

Did You Know?

How Long Do Rockeries Last?

Hopefully forever! But this does depend on the materials used. Rockeries with appropriate draining systems should last indefinitely, so stone is always a good call. Wood and similar materials can eventually rot, so they can last up to 20 years if you're lucky. Rockeries may get damaged if there's a construction site on your property and may require repair due to accidental impact. Aside from that there shouldn't be a problem! We've seen retaining walls that are over 100 years old still in great condition, both functionally and in appearance.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Retaining Wall FAQs

Answers to the questions homeowners ask us most.

How much does a retaining wall cost in Seattle?

Retaining wall costs in the Seattle area typically range from $25 to $75 per square foot depending on materials, wall height, and site conditions. A standard residential rockery wall runs $8,000–$25,000. We provide free, no-obligation estimates so you know exactly what to expect before any work begins.

How long does it take to build a retaining wall?

Most residential retaining wall projects take 2–5 days from start to finish. Larger projects with significant excavation or multiple walls may take 1–2 weeks. We'll give you a clear timeline in your proposal so you can plan accordingly.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Washington State?

In most Washington cities, retaining walls over 4 feet in height require a building permit. Our team is familiar with local permitting requirements across King, Snohomish, and Skagit counties and can advise you on what's needed for your specific project.

What is the difference between a rockery and a retaining wall?

A rockery uses large natural boulders stacked and fitted together without mortar — it's a traditional Pacific Northwest style that blends beautifully with the landscape. A retaining wall is a broader term that includes rockeries as well as concrete block, poured concrete, and timber walls. Both serve the same structural purpose: holding back soil and preventing erosion.

How long do rockeries and retaining walls last?

A properly built rockery can last 50–100+ years with minimal maintenance. The key is correct foundation depth, proper drainage behind the wall, and quality stone selection — all of which are standard in every New Life Rockeries project.
