Expert Rockery Contractors Serving Seattle, Washington
Seattle has a long and proud tradition of natural stone rockeries — the Pacific Northwest style of stacking large boulders and native stone to hold hillsides, frame gardens, and define property edges. Drive through Queen Anne, Magnolia, or Ravenna and you'll see rockeries that have stood for 60, 70, even 80 years, their stones now covered in moss and integrated into the landscape as naturally as the hillsides themselves. New Life Rockeries has been building and restoring these structures in Seattle since 1975.
What makes a Seattle rockery last is the same thing that makes any retaining structure last in the Pacific Northwest: drainage. Seattle's glacial soils shed water slowly, and a rockery without proper drainage behind it will shift, heave, and eventually topple as hydrostatic pressure builds through the wet season. Our Seattle rockeries include a gravel drainage layer behind the stone face, a perforated drain pipe at the base, and careful stone placement that allows water to weep through the wall face without undermining the structure.
We source our stone from Pacific Northwest quarries — primarily basalt from Eastern Washington and granite from the Cascades — selecting pieces for both structural integrity and the natural, weathered appearance that Seattle homeowners expect. We don't use imported stone or manufactured products for rockeries; the character of a natural stone rockery comes entirely from the material itself, and we take stone selection seriously.
Seattle's SDCI requires permits for rockeries over 4 feet in height, and walls in steep slope or landslide hazard areas require additional review. Many of Seattle's most beautiful rockeries are in exactly these areas — Queen Anne's south slope, the hillsides above Puget Sound in Magnolia, the ravines of Ravenna — and we have extensive experience navigating the permit process for complex hillside sites.

What We Build

Natural Stone Rockeries
Hand-placed granite, basalt, and fieldstone rockeries that integrate seamlessly with Pacific Northwest gardens. Each stone is selected for its natural character and placed to create a composition that looks native to the landscape.

Boulder Rockeries
Large-format boulder installations for dramatic landscape statements. We use equipment to place boulders precisely, creating rockeries that anchor the landscape and provide natural seating, garden borders, and focal points.

Terraced Rockeries
Multi-level rockery systems that transform sloped Seattle properties into beautiful, usable outdoor spaces. Terraced rockeries create planting pockets for native plants, ferns, and groundcovers that thrive in Pacific Northwest conditions.

Rock Garden Installation
Decorative rock gardens that combine natural stone with carefully selected plants. We design rock gardens that provide year-round interest with minimal maintenance — perfect for Pacific Northwest homeowners.

Rockery Repair & Restoration
Assessment and repair of existing rockeries that have shifted, settled, or deteriorated. We restore rockeries to their original integrity while improving drainage and stability.

Slope Stabilization Rockeries
Structural rockeries designed to stabilize slopes and prevent erosion while maintaining a natural appearance. Ideal for properties where a formal retaining wall would look out of place.
