Everything You Need to Know to Prepare Your Property for Fall

Every season holds its own promises of change. Springs brings the anticipation of new life and growth, summer holds the excitement of vacation and adventure, and autumn promises a harvest and astounding beauty.

But with the changes of the seasons and weather, comes new responsibilities when it comes to your property. Your property needs to be properly tended and cared for to prepare it for the fall and winter weather changes. Here are the five things you can’t miss on your autumn to-do list.

1. Drain Water Systems

Temperatures will occasionally drop below freezing here in the Pacific Northwest. When that happens, any water that is left sitting in pipes or irrigation systems freezes, expands, and bursts, damaging the plumbing.

To keep your water systems from requiring expensive repairs, drain and winterize your outdoor faucets and irrigation systems. This includes shutting down any water features or sprinkler systems and draining them properly.

2. Dispose of Leaves

Leaves that are left in a colorful blanket across your property may seem pretty and pituresque now, but once those bright leaves start rotting, your lawn will look disheveled and unkempt. They can also attract pests like rodents and insects to your property. Rake up and dispose of these leaves.

Remember, the task of raking your leaves does not have to be a chore! Bring the whole family together in a collaborative effort to prepare your property for fall. In addition to raking, be sure to rid the gutters of any leaves or debris to be sure they can drain properly once the heavy Seattle winter rains arrive.

3. Prepare your Garden

If you have a garden on your property, now is the time to clear away what remains of this year’s harvest and prepare it for next spring. Clear away the weeds, apply mulch, and remove any spent annuals.

If you would like to have a garden on your property but don’t have a yard that is properly landscaped, our team here at New Life Rockeries can help you! Fall is the perfect season to redesign your property, and our landscaping services can help you restructure your property to allow for a beautiful garden next year.

4. Prune Shrubs and Hedges

The Pacific Northwest doesn’t usually see much snow or ice, it’s true. But when we do, it wrecks havoc on our shrubs and hedges! The snow and ice weighs down frail tree limbs and shrub branches, causing them to bend or break. This damages the plant and puts it at increased risk of disease and future weakening.  Pruning in fall can eliminate this threat and encourage new, healthy growth in the spring.

If you’re looking to add new plants or shrubs to your Seattle property, or maybe even introduce some new intricate rockeries, New Life Rockeries can help you design and construct beautiful fall rockeries to enhance the aesthetic beauty of your property.

5. Seal Cracks

Cracks are bad news for your Seattle property. If they are allowed to fill with water, the freezing winter weather will cause the moisture to expand and widen the crack. Small gaps, crevices, or holes can be found in the sealant around doorframes and windows, and even in the pavement, driveway, or sidewalks on your property. Sealing these cracks can prevent water from further damaging your property.
